Unit testing symfony plugins with PHPUnit – My session at the symfony day 2010. What do you expect?
7 Comments | Posted by Christian in Miscellaneous
I was asked to speak at the symfony day 2010 in Cologne and I happily agreed to it. My session will be about Unit testing symfony plugins with PHPUnit.
While I have a clear view what to talk about within the one hour I have I wonder what your expectations are?
So instead of writing down what I want to present I ask you to have your say to give a good user experience.
- What are the topics you want to hear about?
- What is the level of knowledge I should assume the audience to have?
- Do you expect a presentation or hands on examples?
- Theory or practice?
- What should I wear?
Comments please!

Isnt it more easy ask in the start with stand up hands about theirs experience? (Who knows HTML?) i dont know why, but in my jobs interviews ever asked me it, must be very important question…you must make it…
Mental Note:(I need tu Update my CV with more strong letters: PHP ANALYST-DEVELOPER)
I think that will be very usefull, talk about the integration with Hudson and advantages of using it with true COMPLEX examples, that its when the UnitTesting have more sense. Will be excited can see the true power of unit testing in a production apps, dont only with 2 or 3 simple methods…
Christian you know if will be a video recording?

Okay, since I’m attending with three developers of my team which are not really into unit testing yet, here’s my wishlist
- How to integrate PHPUnit into your symfony 1.x projects
- Are there any dedicated plugins to be recommended?
- symfony and unit testing – what to test and what better not to test
- Development tips and tricks with unit testing on your mind (how to write good code and avoid untestable code)
- Common patterns for unit testing (“How do I test that?”)
- Unit Testing with the database and symfony’s ORM (yes, that includes Propel)
- Best practices
- CI (phpUnderControl / Hudson)
And I’d really prefer a practical approach.
Last year’s session by Bernhard was really good but it was far too much theory.
People new to this topic really have to realize how important unit testing is for a project’s long-term success. This is a thing you can only achieve with a lot of hands-on examples.
I guess that’s enough stuff for a start

first and foremost I want to know when was this session planed? and If we can have more details about the session on the web, by recoding it or just by posting the session content. Thanks
Concerning the content, adding to b00giZm post , here two other ideas for your talk
Don’t forget talking about “The Lime Testing Framework” and it’s advantages comparing to other php unit test framework.
You can talk after about methods Lime framework provide. and explain the ones we used a lot. through some examples.
I’m in France, hope I’ll be able follow through the web your session
